We've had such a great start to the year! We're finishing up our ukulele units, and are about to begin our guitar unit. Each grade is working on different skills and different songs.
ECE: We'll practice our hand position, and how to strum with a pick.
Kindergartners: We'll learn hand position, how to strum with a pick, and how to play the easy G chord.
First graders: We're reviewing what we learned last year, but now we'll be playing a song with 2 chords; easy G and easy C.
Second graders: We're moving up in the world and playing a song with 3 easy chords.
Third graders: We're playing a great classic rock song, with lots of switching between 3 chords.
Fourth and fifth graders: Get ready to read a tab chart as we play along with some well-known tunes!
ALSO...check your Dojo announcement for our music shows. If you can't find the announcement, just email me and I'll send you the schedule.

May, 2022
Even though it's nearly the end of the year, there's still a lot going on in music.
Our ECE students are working on a final project. They get to choose what they want to play, and whether or not they go solo or as part of an ensemble. Look for a video to their music, coming out the last week of school on Class Dojo!
Kindergarten students are learning songs for Continuation. They'll present these to you the last week of school. Look for info about time and place from their classroom teachers.
First graders are starting their final projects. Maybe they'll form a band. Maybe they'll sing a solo with a microphone. So many choices! Look for their video links the last week of school in Class Dojo.
Second, third and fourth graders are also working on their final projects. (We call them Build-a-Projects.) We'll be inviting parents to come to the music room to hear these during the last 2 weeks of May. I'll post times and days on Dojo by May 16.
Fifth Graders will present their show, "The Birth of a Nation" later in May. All the info you need about date and time has been published on class Dojo. Please feel free to email me if you have questions. cynthia_o'[email protected]
Finally, the Talent Show is coming up the last week of school. Third, Fourth and Fifth graders may audition through Google Classroom. The deadline for auditions is Monday, May 16. Please check Class Dojo so you get more details.

March/April 2022
February, 2022
It's show season in the music room. Many of our classes are practicing for their shows, most of which will be filmed for families to view.
ECE...They're working on "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle". We're learning dance moves and lyrics for songs which encourage us to help our planet. Both classes even wrote handbell songs! The plan is to get this filmed and get the link out by the second week of March.
Kindergarten students are working to play the violin, using pizzicato. (Also known as plucking.) I'm so excited by the way they treat our instruments and the way they remember how to hold the violin while they play the notes. Look for videos and photos on Class Dojo!
First Grade kiddos are working on a show called, "Then and Now". This show is about the differences between Pioneer and current times. Look for the video link to come out the third week of March.
Second graders are learning how to play the violin, using a bow. We're doing a great job of playing the beginning of "Twinkle Twinkle". Many of our students go to other classes, and even the office, to play for others.
Third graders are rehearsing a program called "The Weather Show". This show follows the adventures of Dr. Emma, who is searching for the amazing Ancient Barometer. Our goal is to have the videos filmed the week of February 14, with the links available by the next week.
Fourth and Fifth graders are playing "Theme and Variations", inspired by Mozart! They've learned the basics on violin, and are now practicing these as a class ensemble.
You can look forward to seeing their final videos the week of February 21.
Glee Club is working hard on their production of "School House Rock!" We're on track to video our performance on March 1!

January, 2022
As we enter 2022, we're starting some very fun new units!
ECE: We'll introduce violins, but then get started on a show called "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle", which goes along with what we'll be learning in the regular classroom. We'll learn songs about helping our earth, and we'll even write songs for handbells. During the week of March 7, we'll make a video of our show and send you the link so you can enjoy our hard work.
Kindergarten classes will finish up guitars, and make a video to post on Class Dojo. After that, we'll be starting on violins. We'll learn how to hold them and pluck the strings,
First Graders will have a few weeks of violin, but then we'll switch into show mode. We'll start working on a show that tells the differences between Pioneer Life and present day. We'll plan to make our video the week of March 14, and will have the link ready for you by March 18.
Second graders are working on violins. We'll be learning pizzicato (plucking the strings) and how to hold the violin bow as we play.
Third graders have been practicing for their program, "The Weather Show". Each class is performing separately, and will make a video for release the week of February 14. This show is so fun, and we're excited to present it to you.
Fourth and Fifth are working on violin playing, and will learn songs that they'll present on a Dojo video. It's been a pleasure to see and hear them so far!
Glee Club is working on "Schoolhouse Rock! Jr." This show is coming together quite well, and we're having so much fun in our Tuesday morning rehearsals. We'll make our video on March 1, and should have the link for you to view it by the end of that week.

December, 2021
We're working very hard in the music room!
ECE students are learning to play C, D, and E on the keyboards. They've even started reading a song with Cat, Dog and Elephant!
Kindergarten students are rehearsing for their show, "Winter Traditions". We'll be making a video of the different classes, and putting them together to create a fun program for you. I'll be posting the link in Class Dojo, so keep an eye out!
First Graders are working on learning how to find all of the white keys on the keyboards. They'll be playing sheet music once they know where the notes are, and what they're named.
Second grade is also working on finding and playing the white notes on the keyboard. They're choosing the song they'd like to work on. There are so many choices!
Third graders have started rehearsing for "The Weather Show". This is a musical about a scientist who is in search for the Ancient Barometer. Look for this musical to be produced in February.
Fourth and Fifth graders are learning how to read and play TAB (a system of reading music using fret numbers) on guitar. Fourth Grade is learning the riff for "Seven Nation Army", and fifth graders are learning the classic "Smoke on the Water". Yay!
The Glee Club is working on the show, "School House Rock!" Students have their assigned parts, and and find them in Google Classroom, if they don't have a copy. Just email me to request the link and code.

August/september 2021
Welcome back to LIVE music in the music room!
Here's some of what we're working on for the beginning of school:
All classes will work on understanding basic routines and rituals in the music room. We've had more than a year without being in live lessons, so it's understandable if we're a little bit rusty. Just for fun, here's a little video to remind us how to get instruments!
https://youtu.be/8FLpAa4RNMg
Once we're done working on routines and rituals, we'll start an overview of ukulele. Students are welcome to bring a personal ukulele, as long as parents give permission. Don't worry...we have enough to use in the classroom too.
Fourth and Fifth graders, if you're interested in joining Glee Club, please click on the tab in the site. You'll see beginning information.

Our K-2nd graders wrote great songs that expressed their personalities, likes, and passions. Each song included 2 verses and 2 choruses. This month, we're working on songs, rhythms and rhymes that we use in playground games.
Our 3-5 Graders are finishing up their Black History music unit, and have done a great job! We will jump back into some Soundtrap work as we learn how to do loops, collaborate, and created podcasts.
If you'd like to catch up on past videos, here's the link to my Youtube channel.

September, 2020
Hi everyone! This first month of school looks so different than in the past! As I start year 36 of teaching, it's incredible to me that a) I'm still here and b) I truly enjoy creating fun lessons for online learning!
Weekly lessons are found on each grades' Seesaw page. Music lessons are uploaded on Wednesday mornings, and students have 1 week to complete them. Here are the units we're working on for primary and intermediate grades:
Primary grades (ECE-2nd) are visiting musical opposites. These are Presto and Largo; Forte and Piano; and High and Low pitches. Students will present a final demonstration of these opposites on a FlipGrid link, which I'll provide in their Seesaw app.
Intermediate grades are doing a project combining art and music. They'll explore their artistic and musical Identity, and create a project which combines the 2. They'll load their Identity project on Flipgrid so their peers can see their great presentations!
Here's a link to my Youtube channel, where you can find past lessons, as well as just-for-fun videos that include my dogs.

ECE is working on their show, "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle". This cute show will happen on Friday, April 10, at 10:20 a.m.in our auditorium.
Kindergarten will be working on basic hand bell techniques. They'll learn how to match notes and play them at the right time to perform fun songs!
First graders are practicing for their show, "Then and Now". This show visits some of the differences between pioneer and present times. I will be rescheduling this show, and will put up the new date as soon as I know. Thank you for your understanding.
Second and third graders are working on violins. They'll be learning pizzicato (plucking) and bowing technique as they learn to play a song!
Fourth and fifth graders will start planning their end-of-year projects. They'll have the choice of creating songs, performing cover tunes, creating dance choreography, or even inventing or building an instrument.
Our Glee Club has finished for the year, but we've had some amazing experiences. Most recently we sang the National Anthem at a Nuggets game! I'm so proud of our students for their great performance!
Honors Choir students have begun to practice for their May 6 program. Look for more info to come about at time and location.

December, 2019
Welcome to December at Edison! Here are some of the happenings in the music room.
ECE students are learning C, D, and E on the keyboard. They're playing a song called "Help the Dog" using these notes, and we'll make a video for class Dojo. Look for this to be posted by winter break.
First graders are working on keyboard skills. They'll be playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb", which will be on a Class Dojo video for your enjoyment.
Second graders are playing "Over the Rainbow" on keyboards. This beautiful song will be available for parents to view during winter break.
Third and fourth graders are choosing from "Believer", "Stand By Me" or "Star Wars" to play on keyboards. They've made personal goals about playing chords, melody, or both. Some are doing their chosen song as a group and some will be playing solo.
Fifth graders have a choice of playing "Believer", "Stand By Me" or "Star Wars" on the keyboard. They also may choose their own song if they'd like. They're deciding on their song arrangements and student groups.
Glee Club is very busy working on winter songs. They'll be singing at Little Man Ice Cream on Wednesday, December 4. Contact me for more details if you'd like to attend. (Cynthia_o'[email protected]) We'll also be filmed by Channel 31 for our appearance on Christmas Day! More details to follow,

Each music lesson will include a quick review of class rules, a warmup, the main content or meat of the day's lesson, and studio time. We work on instrument technique, basic music theory, and Teaching Artist Behaviors (studio work). I'll have a list up for the year's concerts as soon as we've scheduled them (By September 1, usually.) If you have questions, please send me an email at cynthia_o'[email protected]. Many thanks! |
